good evening, i'm jim vance. i'm wendy rieger sitting in for dore reason. everyone is gearing up for the biggest snowstorm in quite some time. some of the worst part is revere beach in massachusetts. the high wind causing havoc. snow already starting to fall this afternoon. people are being told to stay indoors tonight and stay off the here in our area, people in loudoun county saw a little bit of snow this morning. school started two hours late. parts of the country saw 2 to 3 inches of snow. it wasn't weather but a downed tree that caused 50,000 homes without power in prince yorjs county and the district today. a tree fell and substations went out. it wasn't just homes affected. let's go back to the beach, to boston. let's see what this monster storm it doing. here's jay gray. >> reporter: good evening from boston where the wind has picked up. the snow blowing sideways. these conditions are only expected to intensify through

the evening here. salt and sand is being loaded into trucks in cities across the northeast. >> we have a 34,000 tons of salt over 600 pieces of equipment ready to be deployed throughout the storm. >> still, in boston and other areas where the snow is moving in, it may not be enough. in maine, 19 cars with part of a pile-up that started when a driver lost control on the ice. as conditions get worse, the governor of massachusetts has now closed roads across the entire state. >> i have now signed an executive order banning vehicle traffic effective at 4:00 today. >> air travel is also out. more than 3,000 flights have been canceled and that number is expected to grow along with accumulations of snow across the regionment snowplows, blowers and shovels are working overtime

but can't -- it could threaten power lines. >> that's our biggest concern. this storm presents variables that could produce some pretty extraordinary winds. >> with the potential of being holed up inside for several days, families are making a last-minute dash to make sure they have what they need to get through the storm. >> food supplies, water, batteries, stuff for the fireplace. >> supplies that may have to last a while. even after the snow stops falling. >> this is going to be a very serious weather event. if we get the amount of snow forecast, the recovery will be slow. people should prepare for that. >> though clearly the time for preparations is just about ended. >> unfortunately, these conditions are going to continue a bit longer than first expected. the blizzard warning in the boston area has now been extended through 1:00 tomorrow afternoon. live in boston, i'm jay gray,

now back to you. >> our region will be spared of snow. but the wind might be a factor. doug kammerer is here to tell us more about what we can expect over the weekend. >> that's really the only factor. some areas woke up to snow, rappahannock, culpeper, places along the blue ridge saw snow earlier this morning. for us, it is the colder air behind the storm and the wind up towards new york and boston. the smoe is flying and going to get a lot worse before it gets better. snowfall upwards of 2 to 3 inches per hour. boston could get more snow in one hour than we get all year long. at least so far. no chance for snow in our area any time soon. not for the next couple of days. here's our radar. a little bit of shower activity towards northern portions of maryland. that's it. a few light showers around. but what's coming in is going to be that wind. we have a wind advisory in effect and is in effect until 6:00 a.m. tomorrow morning for

winds gusting to 50 miles an hour, including the baltimore area. back towards frederick and martinsburg. back towards leesburg and fauquier county. the d.c. area, southern portions of maryland, you're not in the advisory but we'll still see winds of 30 to 40 miles an hour. that's going to if a long way to cool you down tonight. tlrs 35 by 8:00. the windchills tonight will be in the 20s by 11:00. it's going to be a very cold night. temperatures in the morning, around 30 degrees. windchill tomorrow morning between 15 and 20 in the d.c. metro area. some of you waking up to windchills around 10 to 15 degrees. the cold air is coming. i'll show you how long it sticks around in my forecast. thanks, doug. as noted earlier, that winter storm is responsible for thousands of flights along the east coast already being canceled. amtrak service also is suffering the impact. transportation reporter adam tuss live at national airport now. travelers trying to find ways to get in and out of here.

adam? >> reporter: yeah, jim. people definitely getting creative with their travel plans. of course, getting to new england tonight, that's going to be next to impossible. most people we talked to today just trying to get away from the storm. >> take the planes out of the path of the blizzard and you create a domino effect. >> what's going on in new york and boston is similar to what happened here in the blizzard of 2010. airlines see the storm coming, reduce the flight activity so by the time the snow falls, there are no planes left at that airport. >> the authority saying it could be a while before the flight's schedules resume. here at the airport, some travelers not only switching flights but switching airports to get away from the storm. >> i understood the weather is going to get bad out that way. i just found a straight flight back to phoenix. >> over on the rails, amtrak is saying it will be busy picking up the people that didn't make their flights. >> we expect usually when these things happen, the airlines shut down and people transfer to

amtrak for as long as we're running in the direction they want to go. >> andrew and helen from long island couldn't get out of new york. they took an amtrak train to d.c. and have to catch a flight out of bwi marshall to get to their cruise leaving from florida. >> we started at 4:30 this morning into pen station, the amtrak down here and now we're going to the airport. >> by the way, that couple had to catch a flight to houston and connect on a flight to florida. this storm impacting the country. reporting live at reagan national airport, adam tuss, news 4. we're following a developing story out west where, despite that unprecedented manhunt, there is still no sign tonight much christopher dorner, the fired l.a.p.d. officer accused of three recent murders. authorities have been searching a southern california mountain community where his burned out pickup truck was found yesterday. there were a few reported

sightings of dorner today in san diego and downtown l.a. but they didn't pan out. dorner is suspected of targeting police officers and their families. out of vengeance because he was fired from the force in 2008. a man who once served as a soccer coach at a private coach in maryland will had spend a long time in prison for sexually abusing a girl on his team. police arrested 35-year-old charles vasser last june. they say from 2008 to 2009 he had sexual contact with one of his players on the riverdale baptist school soccer team. she was 15 at the time of the abuse started. today a judge sentenced vasser to 35 years in prison. police in annapolis confirm they have found the body of that toddler who was allegedly killed by her mother. earlier this week. they searched through 95 tons of trash in dumb spers. >> they were looking for 2-year-old cassidy booth last night. she smothered the little girl and threw her body in a trash

bin. her daughter was possessed by evil spirits that came out in court documents. she has been held without bond on murder and child abuse charges. four days from now, president obama will deliver the state of the union address. he's expected to tell congress how he wants to handle the budget. gun law reform and other pressing issues. that speech and the republican response to it might well define how the rest of the year plays out. steve handelsman has more. >> jim, it looks like it's going to play out in a tough fashion. deja vu for democrats and republicans. and the fear up here on capitol hill is that the longer these big, big disputes drag out, the tougher it might be to settle. >> house will be in order. >> the next few weeks will be another struggle. actually several between republicans and president obama. over three key issues. gun control. the obama call and the public

clamor to do something is boiling down to universal background checks, a possible deal being worked out by senator schumer, manchin coburn and kirk. two rated a by the nra and two rate the f ziemt immigration is the next. allowing illegal immigrants to stay but no actual plan has been proposed yet. issue three is the biggie that everyone says they hate. sequestering. >> mindless, arbitrary, across the board cuts to take place on march 1st. >> spending cuts in social services and in defense. unless there's finally a deal to cut spending. president obama is making clear he wants in any such deal another tax hike on wealthy, reducing the write-offs on perks like private jets. >> we got to be able to close tax loopholes and deductions that the average american cannot take advantage of, to raise the revenue to actually do the job

in a way that allows us to continue to grow. >> house speaker john boehner warns the focus better not be on tax hikes. >> at some point washington has to deal with its spending problem. >> the battle lines on that fight and on guns and immigration are sure to be laid out in the state of the union address this year and the gop response on tuesday night. >> two new polls president obama's public approval slipped down below 50%. the good feelings from his inauguration giving way at least a little bit to the old feelings of gridlock. i'm steve handelsman, news 4. thank you, steve. somebody hacked into the private account of bush family. according to the website known as the smoking gun, the hacker gained access to the private e-mails, photos and sensitive information sent between both former president bushes and their siblings and friends. one picture appears to show

former president george h.w. bush during his recent hospital stay in houston, texas. we're not showing those photos because they appear to be illegally obtained. spokes men for both former presidents say a criminal investigation is under way. a former parking lot attendant was sentenced to two years in prison. he admitted to stealing about $900,000 in visitor fees. he worked at the ud var haz i center in chantilly. pocketing that parking money was her boss's idea. her managers demanded a share. prosecutors estimate that they took more than $1.3 million over three years. coming up tonight, turmoil in the streets of tunisia. the developments today coming up next. our coverage of that monster blizzard hitting the northeast continues. it could be the worst in 35 years. still reeling after hurricane sandy and tonight we'll show you how volunteers

there's a growing crisis in tunisia tonight. a riot broke out there. the funeral of a political opposition leader in the city of tune is. there was an assassination on wednesday. police fired tear gas at thousands of mourners today. businesses and mass transit are on strike. for the first time in 30 years there. the arab springs uprising began in tunisia two years ago. until this week, that country avoided the recent chaos found in neighboring egypt. some of the most intense conditions we've seen from the storm slamming the northeast are up in massachusetts. the weather channel's mike seidel in the heart of it. he has more from revere beach. take a look. >> reporter: so far we've been hit by wind gusts to 45 miles an hour. look at the snow blowing horizontally. you can hardly see down the beach as the sun goes down.

visibility down to about half a mile. the tide is way out in new england. they have about a 10-foot change between high tide and low tide. another high tied coming in at 9:30 tonight. the tide tomorrow morning is of concern around 10:00. we'll have a surge of two feet. with the seawall and the little rise in elevation, beachfront property will be in good shape. police departments have asked for people to evacuate in marshfield and an area prone to flooding, they will have higher surge. we're expecting a four-foot tidal surge tomorrow morning around 10:00. down there, they're fully exposed to the atlantic. wave heights could have approached, 20, 25 feet. when you couple in wind gusts, 60 to 70 miles an hour, look for a lot of blowing and drifting snow. i wouldn't be surprised to see drifts here as high as 8, maybe 10 feet by tomorroafternoon. along with power outages. we'll be hunkered down here and get off the beach to a safer

location and show you the pictures tonight into tomorrow. is, they've got a ways to go. this is just starting for them. this isn't like it. it's still coming. >> the worst is moving in. just kind of a taste on what's to come for him. they are under the gun towards the -- going to be the three states hit the hardest by the storm. new york city, may dodge a little bit of a bullet like we did. they're still going to see snow. they've been seeing it all day long. the heaviest snow to the east. take a look outside. if you're thinking about heading out and about, one hinge to know. the cold air an the wind starting to move in right now. the conditions are not that bad right now. we saw some shower activity come through the last couple of hours. towards the philadelphia area, nothing around region. all that storm is still up towards the north. look at all the snow. buffalo, over towards albany, through new york, over towards

boston and providence, through portions of maine. over 7 inches of snow already there. they're just getting started here. see the white bands right in here. that's where you start to get 2 to 3 inches of snow per hour: so far this year, 1.3 inches at reagan national airport. they'll get that in half an hour. that's how fast it's going to come down. talk about jobs snow they're going to see. these are the latest computer models. 6.7 inches in new york. i think they'll get 6 to 10. no longer over a foot. but i think some areas of lower new york will see that. 27 inches on providence, 27.8 in boston. that's just one computer model. they could get chose to 2 feet of snow. that's a pretty good look at what they may get in the bos ton region. the winds are the big factor. this is the factor that we're going to see, too. 8:00 tomorrow morning, 53 mile an hour wind gusts in boston. near 50 in providence, stronger along the coast. for us, we're going to see gusts

over 40 miles an hour early in the morning. you're going to wake up tomorrow morning, step outside and it's going to be a much different air mass than when you stepped outside earlier had afternoon. the winds will calm down, though, during the day tomorrow down to about 20 to 30 miles an hour late in the afternoon. but a very cold day and wind advisory in effect until 6:00 a.m. does not include the d.c. metro area. areas of southern maryland towards fredericksburg. doesn't mean we won't see wind. the winds will be 30 to 40 miles an hour. in the advisory, we can see gusts to 50 miles an hour especially in some of the ridge stops here. we could see downed trees with some of the rain that we've seen around the region recently. just watch out for that. this is what to expect overnight. the winds, they're picking up right now. winds gusting 18 to 25 miles an hour in the d.c. metro area. the strongest gusts will be early in the morning tomorrow. then they'll start to calm down a little. the gusts to 40 to 50 miles an hour in some spots as i mentioned. then even it does include the d.c. metro area. the biggest winds will stay just off to the west. let's take a look at the

windchills. tonight, right now, sitting with windchills in the 30s. it's on the chilly side. by 11:00 tonight, look what happens. here we are at any time at 11:00. 17 in frederick. 18 in martinsburg. 22 in manassas. tomorrow morning, colder. down to 16 in washington. 13 in gaithersburg. 15 in culpeper. you can see what we're dealing with early tomorrow morning and during the afternoon. the windchills staying in the 20s for most of you during saturday afternoon. best news is, sunday is going to be a lot nicer. tomorrow, mostly cloudy, windy and cold. windchills in the 20s all day pour your saturday. sunday, much nicer. partly sunny skies a high of 45. then a good chance of rain on monday with warm temperatures up to 56. 54 on tuesday. then this is a storm we have to watch out for very closely. i have a chance of rain and snow. could be all snow. eer going to be watching this one closely. this one towards valentine's day. i want to show you sunday. because we need a good day in the weekend and sunday will be

it. the best day of the weekend under partly sunny skies. the winds staying on the light side. thinking about doing some skiing on sunday. might just get up there. little bit of natural snow, mother nature snow. not bad at all. watching that storm for next week now. we'll see if that one comes here. i'm almost done predicting snowstorms in our region. not having any this year you can say. next time. three months after superstorm sandy clobbered the northeast, volunteers are playing an important role in rebuilding there. in new jersey alone, 28,000 people are helping out. some of them are sacrificing their careers. others are logging hundreds of miles. jim rosen feld shows us how everyday people are becoming heroes to those hit the hardest. >> this is part of my door. the storm ripped it off. >> three months off sandy demolished his staten island

home. this looks good. >> when i first tried to come into this house, like a hurricane hit inside the house. >> now down to the studs. this city utility worker is looking forward to getting the walls up so he can move back home. >> it's coming together. i never would have been this far, especially without all the help and volunteers. >> it's coordinated by a small local nonprofit group. >> once the heater is on, electric works, new subfloor is in, we can get it insulated and sheetrocked next week. an effort set up within hours of the storm. >> i work for a financial technology company. >> and then? >> i volunteer here after that. >> a staten island nay testify, he logs more than 100 miles a day between home, work and staten island. >> my mom's house was affected by the storm, my brother's house was affected by the storm.

>> it's a borough still reeling from the ravages of sandy nearly two dozen died here and hundreds of homes were lost. >> some of the most severely damaged homes we saw in the days right after the storm are now gone. but still here, tents manned by volunteers serving hot meals. across the region, nonprofits like guy on rescue on staten island and shores united relief foundation in new jersey. they spread the word on social media sites, bridging crucial gaps that sandy victims either haven't gotten or can't afford. ryan's expertise is in marketing but he's put his career on hold to help his battered home state. >> i've dropped my real job do this. this is more important. so there is no juggling. there's just one ball in the air and it's called sandy. >> it's that same commitment back on staten island that's gradually transforming this damaged shell back into a home. >> without them, a lot of us would have walked away from the homes, myself included. >> because?

there's a lot of conversation these days about school safety and one local area getting a lot of attention for efforts. jackie bensen has a report on what schools are doing to keep students safe in charles county, maryland. >> ha does that say about you as a society now? >> discussing a quote from russian literature is all in a day's work for the corporal at the sheriff's department. he's the school resource officer at mcdone oaf high school in maryland.

in the complicated world of teenagers, he's an approachable adult. with advice, justice and tough love. >> when people come in, i think they're comforted, whether it be a teacher, student or parent to know we have an officer that can react appropriately, immediately to a situation. >> for years, while other law enforcement agencies were pulling cops from schools for budget reasons, charles county sheriff rex coffee was adding them. >> our officers in the middle schools and high schools, they're responsible to make periodic checks to the elementary schools. that's something we've been doing for a while in charles county. >> the school system has its own version of the crimesolvers program. cash for anonymous tips that solve or prevent crimes. >> we were there to assist them and be available for their questions and concerns. eventually you get from the point of parking cars out back and being seen up front. >> as the nation continues to ponder the best way to protect its schoolchildren in the mind

of students at mcdoneough. it's simple. the corporal takes care of it. >> i know we had a fight the other day. he was there to break it up. he talked to everybody, see what went on. >> come june when they graduate, that's the proud he's moment. this is my fifth year. to see that they've matured and are growing up and becoming productive part of society. >> officials in charles county felt that this program is so successful they've actually invited the united states justice department to come here and see how it works. jackie bensen, news 4. tonight, airport officials say if you're planning to travel to the northeast, be prepared to wait. it could be days before the flights are back to normal because of the storm. some people with canceled flights, they turn to amtrak. amtrak is also experiencing service disruptions. travel between union station and new york is going as planned. but there are no trains running north of manhattan. let's get the latest on

conditions up in connecticut. >> good evening from a very snowy danbury, connecticut where a level 3 storm emergency has been declared just in this area. a complete state of emergency has been declared for the state of connecticut. the only reason i can stand in this intersection is because travel has been essentially banned much the only people allowed on these roads according to government here are emergency vehicles and anyone with a 4 by 4. otherwise, they're advising people to stay off the roads. the reason for this is so the plows can get to the 240 miles of roads just in danbury alone. in connecticut, 200 national guard troops have been deployed to help on the highways. things like 94, 95 and 84, they're trying to get people who could be stuck in this situation even though they're not supposed to be off the roads and there are additional 500 connecticut guard troops that will be able to help them do so.

in terms of the travel ban for the state of connecticut, it's supposed to be in effect through saturday because this area is supposed to get between 16 to 18 inches of snow. many people calling it the belly of the beast and already the wind is picking up. yet another concern for outages. for news 4, i'm tracy strahan. tonight a mother grieving her son's death is asking one of his friends to come forward with answers. somebody dropped the man, he was wounded, he dropped him off at a prince george's fire station this morning and then drove away. pat collins spoke to the victim's family. >> i got a call first thing this morning, i was woken by the detectives calling me letting me know they were on the way to my home. as of right now, i still want to believe that it's not true. >> sorrow at the thompson home in tan tal an. the family gathers to mourn the

loss of charles thompson. he was 27 years old. the father of two small children. he had a job. he was going to school. he was shot to death early this morning. >> you always think they will bury you. here i'm having to prepare to bury him. >> it happened shortly after midnight. a man drives to the volunteer fire department. he parks the car in the lot over here and then he gets out and runs to the front door of the firehouse. he rings the doorbell and then tells a firefighter inside that a man in the back seat of the car, he needs some help. and then that friend, that so-called friend of the victim, he runs away. in the back seat of that car, in the parking lot of this firehouse, they find charles thompson. he had been shot in the head. they take him to the hospital.

he's pronounced dead there. this afternoon, police back at that firehouse looking for evidence in this unusual case of murder. where did the shooting happen? why did that friend runaway? turns out the car he was driving was stolen. there are a lot of questions here. and tanya thompson, she wants some answers. >> as any mother would, we just want information. i would like to know what my son's last words was. someone robbed me from that information. >> indeed, many, many questions in this case of murder. charles thompson's friend, he has answers. >> in prince george's county, pat collins, news 4. >> students at the university of maryland, they're being told not to walk alone at night after three robberies on or near campus in the past two weeks. the most recent happened last

night at parking lot kk. that is near the chemical nuclear engineering building. a female student was robbed at gunpoint. the thief took cash, some gift cards, ran off. school immediately sent out a campuswide safety alert. two other students robbed january 27th. those suspect have been caught. more ethics turmoil in the district today. one council member is rejecting calls for him to resign. and another is defending the slow pace of d.c. ethics reform. the mayor is asking for speedier action. >> d.c. mayor vincent gray, good-natured you aredly bringing six packs to the wamu politics hour friday. fresh from an economic development event. >> the first brewery that we've had in the district of columbia in 50 years. >> but the mayor turned more serious when asked about his ethics reform to limit campaign

contributions stuck in the city council. >> i have spoken everywhere or anywhere that people will let me talk about it, i think this is overdue. i think the council should move on it. there's not a necessity for another hearing to be held. >> gray declined to discuss the status of the federal probe into his 2010 campaign for mayor. >> i turned everything over to my attorney and asked him to deal with it. >> on ethics reform, kenyan mcduffy said his government operations committee will hold four hearings on many ethics issues. >> i got to tell you, tom, this is a complicated issue. i'm not making any excuses but it's complicated. we want to get this right. >> the ongoing ethics debate comes as a washington post editorial strongly called for council member jim graham to resign. the city's ethics panel and metro board have both raised questions about graham's handling of city and metro contracts. graham faces no legal charges. graham denies wrongdoing. he issued his own strongly worded statement. i am not resigning. in the district, tom sherwood,

politicians, family, friends admirers bid final farewell to christine jones in southeast d.c. jones was a former maryland state delegate. the first african-american to represent prince george's county in the maryland general assembly. she also taught in the county school system for 30 years. she died two weeks ago after she was pulled from her burning home in temple hills. christine jones was 83 years old. a company in manassas, virginia, is weighing in on a controversy over drones. virginia lawmakers approved a bill banning them. the unmanned surveillance vehicles, banning them for use by law enforcement. supporters say using the unmanned planes for surveillance is an invasion of privacy. aurora flight sciences is the

name of the company. the ceo there does not consider them to be dangerous. he says his planes are too loud to be used for domestic spying. he says policy has not caught up with technology. governor bob mcdonnell has wret to decide will to sign the ban on jones. former prince george's county council member leslie johnson is out of prison now. she was released last week after serving one year for her role in that corruption scheme spearheaded by her husband jack johnson. he's still in jail. when the couple was arrested in 2010, leslie johnson tried to hide thousands of dollars in her undergarments. she also admitted that she flushed a $100,000 bribery check down the toilet. she served her sentence at alderson prison in west virginia. that's where martha stewart served her time. we're talking sports. what's up sm. >> everyone is talking about the caps. used to be the hot ticket in town. now it's the hot button issue. what to do with them coming up

on roadways up and down new england for what promises to be a very long weekend. we've got the latest ahead on nbc nightly news with brian will wrams. that coming up in the next 15, 20 minutes. for us, not getting the storm. as far as the snow is concerned, the winds are starting to pick up. upwards to 20, 25 miles per hour. current temperature 42 degrees. a few showers earlier. those have moved out. we're going to see a slight chance of a shower at 7:00. 9:00, windy and cold. cold and windy. 31 with a chind chill of 20 at 11:o 0 at night. make sure you're ready for the wind and cold tonight. 36 in gaithersburg. huntingtowne at 40 degrees. what are we seeing? the storm is up toward the north and east. philadelphia starting to get in on the snow. they have not seen any snow thus far. their totals will be way down. new york city saw some of the heaviest snow earlier. it's just starting to move to the east.

it's going to be a wild weekend. >> it is. if you have plans this weekend and you think tomorrow is going to be the outdoor day, you might want to think about doing it on sunday. tomorrow will be a very cold day because of that storm. take a look at what's going on up toward boston. snowfall rates at 2 to 3 inches per hour. for us, this is going to be mainly a wind event. take a look at this. this is up towards the boston area. you can see the flakes really coming down right now. they're getting ready for nightly news. you can tune in. i believe that's -- mott is out there right now. a little jealous, but trust me, we're not done just wet. we might get something here over the next couple of weeks. the forecast, a high of 38 tomorrow. the winds tomorrow will bring the temperatures down. the windchill around 20 to 25 all day. 45 on sunday. sunday looking like a pretty nice day. monday a high of 56 degrees with rain likely and then 54 on

the bears, the lions, the browns and especially the green bay packers. because the packers had her be riley from philly. on arrival here in d.c., i still hated the redskins. by then it was more the name than team. bobby mitchell, charlie taylor changed that for me, as did sonny and all too briefly, vince lombardi. as the years went by, i started loving that team, though. really the players. larry brown, pat fisher, doc walker, pete wysocki. as my love for smurfs and over the hill gang grew, so did my distate for that in my view vulgar name. you see, back in the day, when i wasn't scanning the paper to see what roy cam nell a or buddy young had done, i was watching tim holt and love me some randolph scott. it was in those westerns and so

many more, all of them, that i never, not once ever heard of a red skin referred to respectfully. a red skin was always dirty, dirty redskins, bloody redskins, savage redskins, inhuman, unhuman, you name it. back in the day. you wanted to insult a black man, an italian, a jew an irishman and start a fight, you threw outertain words. you know what they are. they were and are pejoratives of the first order, the worst order specifically intended to injure. in my view, redskins was and is in that same category. few years back, i decided to stop using it on the air. george michael bet me nobody would notice. i had to pay up. we got not a single question or complaint. people just assumed i must have used the word. it is that much a part of d.c.
